Mossley were pushed all the way by a lively Stocksbridge side at Bracken
Moor this evening, but did enough in attack in the first half and in defence
in the second to secure a second successive victory.
The game was an entertaining affair throughout, played on a lush but lively
surface.
Mossley were lively from the off and had already threatened on several
occasions before taking in 14th minute lead. Rhodri Giggs’ long
corner was headed home at the far post by Steve Sheil.
Lee Bracey made a fine save to deny Andy Ring but it felt like Saturday
again as Mossley then raced into a two goal lead on 20 minutes when Jordan
Goodeve rasped home another great strike from a free kick 25
yards out after Downey had been fouled.
The home side reduced the arrears two minutes later when a ball in from
the right eluded the Mossley defence and Stefan Zoll
was on hand to score despite the desperate attempts of Andy Thackeray
to clear the danger.
Stocksbridge then enjoyed a spell of pressure and Sheil headed Bullimore’s
free kick off the line.
However Mossley were in no mood to capitulate and opened the two goal
advantage again in the 32nd minute. Rhodri Giggs won a corner on the right
and Morning struck the perfect cross for Karl Vernon
to powerfully head home from 12 yards.
The second half saw Mossley forced to defend deeper as Stocksbridge
tried to find a way back into the game and Chris Dolby
gave them hope when he scored a spectacular 20 solo goal in the 74th minute.
Mossley ought to have been awarded a penalty when Downey was felled in
the corner of the box but fell outside the area and the referee awarded
a free kick on the edge. Giggs effort almost foxing keeper Hodgson.
Denney and Downey had worked tirelessly up front for Mossley all night
both had half chances while at the other end Zoll brought a fine save
out of Bracey who was then forced to tip Ring’s looping effort over
the bar.
Stocksbridge through everything they could at Mossley’s defence
but the Lilywhites sporting the new claret and blue kit for the first
time hung on to secure what may prove to be three excellent points against
a decent Stocksbridge outfit. |
